A Conversation with Cattle in the Western Pasture

I love this view out the window over my computer! The cattle don't come all the way to the fence very often. I always can see them grazing way off in the distance, but not so close that my regular Nikkor 18-55mm lens can get in there and see what the black spots really are! (Did I tell you that when we moved out of our RV into this house I discovered a disaster? My nice long zoom lens was broken. I do not think that it is reparable. So, I am hoping that I will be able to get a new one. I haven't a clue how it got broke - I found it broke in its bag in my camera bag. Grrrrr. If I had it, I could take good pictures of cows and calves all day long and twice on a sunny day!!)
Cattle in the Western Pasture - 18, To the west of our yard is a pasture and it is dotted with beautiful black and black-baldie cattle. I like the black baldie calves the best out there! Sometimes they come right up to the fence, although more often than not, the stay further away where teh grass is not greener!
Anyway, I decided I needed to go out and make friendly with the neighbors since they made the extra effort, you know? I am not always good at making new friends, but these ladies seemed to be standing there just waiting for me to come and introduce myself, so... out I went with my camera - let them think that I am the paparazzi!

Well, hello, ladies! The recent rains have turned the grass so long and luscious and a deep verdant green. Does that make it taste better for you?

I suppose that it helps that this grass hasn't been trampled by your sisters, either. That's a plus! And lucky for you, with this fence up, my treekids can't get in and trample it either! I suppose it is just a deterrent and they could cross the fence if they really wished to. It is only 3 or 4 strands of barbed wire here and there. I'm sure they could cross it. But, I have tried to teach them to be well-mannered and to know their place. So, I hope they stay out of your pasture and in ours.

Looks like you are expecting some new calves soon. OH, WAIT! I would never say that to someone at the grocery store. You know... there are ladies who well, aren't expecting and then whooops! there ya go, sticking foot in mouth. I'm sorry. It's just that many of the cows out in this pasture are turning up with new calves and I guess, I just assumed. I thought maybe you were all in the same Lamaze type group or something and working on building your playgroup or moms group. Sorry, I overstepped. You see, I should have just waved from the window and let you go about your business. Sheesh. Apologizing profusely.

Oh, well, good! You can call me ELM. At least I made a correct assumption! You're looking great and so happy - this weather must be great for you. Looks like the rain helped to clean your coat and give you the freshen up that all nice ladies like before they have their babe. I'm sure you're no exception! It's been nice visiting! Come back to the fence anytime!

They had quite a ways to walk to get back by their herd. But, there was plenty of green grass to nibble on their journey.

I haven't seen them around lately... I wonder if the rancher has brought them into the pens to watch for their calves that are due soon.

I'm not sure, but it was a nice 20 minute visit and it looks like they watch out for each other some. As I sit here remembering the conversation, I see a calf standing out in the pasture about a half mile away. I wonder if it is Clarece's or Martha's or some other mama. Such a fun time... calving in the spring!
