Old Dog & New Tricks

My old dog is really looking older these days. It seems that she has a long list of ailments that we are caring for... dry eye (gross-oh!!), possible thyroid issues, lumps and bumps, lethargy, aching joints and arthritis, halitosis major-osis... the list is too long to really go on.

But, she still enjoys sitting out in the sunshine, she wags her tail and is thrilled to see us when we come in the door after being gone most of the day, she is gentle with the kids, and is a great "alert dog." Please note that I did not say "guard dog." She barks and carries on if someone drives up to the house - or next door, but I don't think that she would do much in terms of taking care of us and guarding us from anyone. But, she looks intimidating and sounds VERY rough!

We are lucky to still have her around... 9 years is a pretty long life for a Boxer dog! But, she may be trying to shorten her own life. IF we accidentally leave the kitchen trash out from under the kitchen sink, she is liable to root around for some morsel tossed inside. She was snagging Pringles the other day, found a portion of a bagel and cream cheese another day and whole steak bones with all the juicy meat left on another day. I guess I should add pancreatitis to the above list of old dog ailments.

I suppose the humans in this house should learn a new trick... ALWAYS put the trash can back under the sink and CLOSE the door!

  2. Awww...Poor Puppy :) I know exactly what you mean. My baby just turned 10 in February. She now has grey hair all on her snout and I think her hearing is going (Of course, I think sometimes she ignores me on purpose). Where does the time go? :(

Hi there, just surfing by and was charmed by your dog - I just love her! :D I was just musing about old dogs and such the other day on my blog.

My dog is a master at figuring out how to get into stuff, including trash cans with lids. The little booger :P

Enjoyed your other pics too - will be back when I can spend more time.

    xoxo
